November 2018

This morning in bed I cancelled our fast pass for Mission Space to see what else was available, and a minute later Mission Space wasn’t even available! Doh!

While we did school Ted worked some more on fixing the door catch, and sanded and painted the screen door. He looked at the magnets with me for the screen door, and tried to see what’s making the screen door not touch the frame. We still haven’t figured that out.

I realized when I went to make lunch that Max left groceries in the back of the truck yesterday! There were grapes, broccoli, kleenex and a toy for the Christmas toy drive back there. Because it was so cold yesterday it looks like the food is just fine, thankfully!

Our lunch was chicken salad on croissants. Yum!

At Epcot Max went right away and got us a DAS for Soarin while the rest of us went to Test Track. We all rode it and then went to the nearby playground we’ve seen a few times lately. Apparently this is new since summer.

Ted’s helping Jack climb this net.

We had Spaceship Earth next, but it broke down! The line didn’t move much at all when we were standing outside, but we finally went in and got right into the cars. Before we even left the loading room, though, it stopped and never started back up! Cast members walked up the ride to let the people at the top out first. I was so bummed that we stopped right at the bottom and not where we could walk all the way through! That would’ve been cool! We each got a fast pass on the way out for any other ride, which is so nice.

We walked to Bavaria which was the main reason for us coming tonight: I wanted the fondue I’d seen here Monday night! We got one to split and it was great! Then I went to get another one and Ted got 2 macs and cheeses from Germany. None of us were impressed with the mac and cheese…I wonder if Mom and Jo will still like it? Next we gave Max a 20 for a pretzel and a coke, while we walked down to Italy for Ted to get some fried mozz sandwiches. Those were ok, but I only ate a small part of one. They didn’t blow me away at all. I bought a san pellagrino blood orange coke for Jack and a Coke Zero for Ted and me to split.

We left Epcot then even though we hadn’t used our ‘free’ fast pass. We were tired and I know the boys were too. At home they took quick showers while Ted looked at the door again…he’s the only one who could open it! That’s not good!

Then Max and Ted played while I watched Lady Bird. It was an ok movie, but I don’t need to re-watch it.

I woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Or really, I went to bed on the wrong side. That’s the worst! And then Jack wet the bed! And the rug! I think he wet the bed, stopped himself and went to the bathroom and then couldn’t get his pants down fast enough so he wet the rug. Ugh. I helped him out of his clothes and got him showered. I didn’t fuss at him…I think last night was too eventful too late to make this entirely his fault.

While we did school Ted worked on the door jamb; hopefully we won’t always have to push the door to un/lock it.

Jack did all his spelling words in one go without me prodding him on! This hasn’t happened in forever! Spelling has been pretty stop and go lately, but since I know he can do it I’m going to start expecting this of him more often. And sometime this week Jack seems to have turned a corner with his Bible reading; he seems to read at a quicker pace and not get so annoyed when we correct him. I don’t think he comprehends much more, but he reads better. This is part of what I was hoping reading aloud with our family would do for him this year, I just can’t believe that it took him more than 10 months to get it!

Ted figured out that the screws he had for the door are too long so he asked for my grocery list and went to the store for screws and groceries.

When he came back we had pintos for lunch, and then I took a nap with Jack.

We had fast passes for Hollywood Studios so we headed out when Jack and I woke up. It was pretty cool outside so I wore 2 sweaters. Our first stop was Star Tours where we saw a new tour again. This one had us pod racing! On our way to the next stop we saw the Game Port and stopped for a bit for the boys to play.

While they were doing their thing Ted got us some drinks, and then we headed out to the bakery to look for the carrot cake whoopie pie that’s so good. They’ve shut down the bakery we went to earlier this year and now the whoopie pie is in the Starbucks on the other corner. The boys got a M&M brownie to split while I shared the whoopie pie with Ted. We sat on the street and ate our goodies while Ted searched for a reservation for us. He finally made one, and then realized that it was to a character meet and the prices were set! Online it said cancellation would cost us so we called to see if we could get that fee waived since it wasn’t clear before we made the reservation that it was a character meet nor that there would be a fee for cancellation. Fortunately the girl I finally got ahold of waived it without a problem.

Our next fast pass was Tower of Terror and it was great, as always. Next up was Slinky Dog Dash, and then Max got us a DAS for Alien Swirling Saucers. We went to the museum to go through it again while we waited for the DAS, but the museum closed at 6pm! Poop! It was about 6:15 at this point. We headed over to meet BB-8 and then Rockin’ Roller Coaster, and tried to cancel the DAS on the way. Apparently those can’t be cancelled using the app. Oh well.

Right near the Tower of Terror they were projecting lasers all down the street and every once in a while they’d shoot out snow, too! That was kinda awesome! We headed back to the truck then, and lost the boys for the first time! Max was gawking at the snow and didn’t see us leave. We probably got about a quarter way down the street when we realized they weren’t behind us. It was no biggie, just kind of funny.

I drove and Ted ordered us a pizza at Marco’s. We went there to eat it, and it was awesome! We got 2 large, and Ted and I ate 1 slice each of the second pizza; it definitely wasn’t needed. Ted drove us home and we all crashed.

We found out today that Elton John is playing here March 18. We’re planning to leave March 8th. Ugh. At first we thought we got all our money back from the ticket company. We learned yesterday morning that because he postponed instead of cancelled we have to sell our tickets ourselves. Poop.

I’d planned to sleep late after an awesome night of Elton John songs, so we slept late anyway.

We did school, and I tried out a new recipe: ravioli and spinach in brown butter sauce. It was a hit!

I had a little rest and then we all went with Ted to finally get his new teeth! Hallelujah! We dropped him off at the dentists’ office and went across the street to the Salvation Army. Today is half off day so it was packed! As I was looking around an older woman stopped me and asked if I thought the shark in the glass jar she’d found had once been alive. Heh. I guess I look like the kind of person who would know that??!! Since Adam has one of these I told her that it probably had been, and told her about Adam having one. This whole thing made me chuckle.

I found a skirt that fit, but sadly it had a light spot on it that I wasn’t sure would come out, so I left it. I stood in line with just a measuring cup for a long time, and just as we were getting to the front Ted said he was ready. I asked if we could stay till I paid and he said yep. Then Jack reached for the cup, but didn’t take it when I handed it to him, so it hit the floor. When he gave it back to me it was in 2 parts! How could dropping it from that height separate the handle from the cup??!! Ugh! I called Max over to keep our place in line while Jack and I found a worker and explained the situation; she promptly told me not to worry about it, did a double take at Jack and then asked him if he was ok? I think she could see how frustrated I was and didn’t want him to feel too bad.

I got Max and we all hurried to get Ted, and then get some Abracadabra!! That place is the best!

At home I cut Ted’s hair and then made a quick supper for the boys. We went to church and when it was over we stayed and talked to Eddie for a while; he’s such a nice guy! We hit up BK on the way home, and once the boys were in bed we watched A Quiet Place.

We did school today, and then Ted and I took a long nap to be ready for tonight!!! I’m so excited! We’re trying to figure out a way that Ted can have a desk for work instead of setting his laptop up on the bed.

We’d given Max permission to bring his Legos outside while we napped, so he did; we knew that Madison might come over to play. Wouldn’t you know that as soon as we woke up Madison and her parents came by!! Why, when I’d gone out of my way to meet them last week do they show up unannounced today when I’ve just gotten up from my nap and still have my pj’s on? I threw on some clothes and didn’t really do anything with my hair and went outside to meet them. I told Ted he didn’t have to come, but they stayed so long that he eventually did. And then we had such a great visit! They’re full-timers too, but about to leave the park for 2 weeks before coming back. I’m excited to get to know them. Too bad the first impression I left included bed head!

We talked and talked and talked, and finally I asked if it was time for me to go make supper and Ted said that it was 5pm; we had to leave in 45 minutes!! I wasn’t going to tell them that we were leaving the boys alone, but Ted told Martin we were going to see Elton John, so I said to Shakira that I would have Max text them if he needed anything. Heh. Desperate much? She was super agreeable, and even said that they could go over to watch a movie or something, but I really thought they would be fine on their own, it’s just nice to have a backup. When they left and the boys were bringing their toys inside Ted took a shower and I washed my hair. I’m so excited!!

The food at the event was really good: Merlot braised beef short ribs, herb roasted Ashley farms chicken breast and tomatoes, pasta primavera with roasted carrots and kale, spinach salad with bleu cheese, cranberries and balsamic vinaigrette, a carving station with Niman ranch pork loin, bleu cheese wedge salad, sautéed fall veggies, and 2 other things I can’t remember. There were also two large platters with assorted desserts; our favorites were the brownies. We ate all we wanted, but I assumed that during the intermission I would go back at least for more desserts.

I noticed that the time for the start of the show had come and gone, but I wasn’t concerned. A guy had come out and done some sound checks; we were just enjoying the night. And then…someone announced that due to an ear infection Elton wouldn’t be playing tonight!!!! I sat there gape-mouthed. I really hoped that it was just a joke, but do they make those kinds of jokes at concerts? And then they turned the lights on! And people started leaving! I was dumbfounded and soooooooo disappointed. Poo.

Ah, so young and naive!
Sad reality: they turned on the lights and everyone’s going home!

We waited a little while to let the crowd thin and then we went home. I told Max what had happened and he was sorry for us; I think he realized what a let-down this was! By 9:44 we were in bed and watching TV.

Ted came to bed as I was getting up. Ugh. I guess jetlag will win this time. We snuggled with the boys a bit and then left him to sleep while we did school. We ate pinto beans for lunch and then I took a nap so I’d be ready for girls’ night!

When I got up the boys went to the playground for a bit while I deboned the rotisserie chicken and got ready to go. It was supposed to be getting cooler after I got to WDW so I fretted a bit about what jacket to wear, and ended up just carrying my thin black hoodie in. Of course not long after I got there I saw the overwhelming gray skies that said I should’ve brought in my rain jacket! Too late!

I heard some awesome music and had a few extra minutes so I checked it out…I didn’t see the name of the band but they were belting out Christian Christmas music and it was amazing! They were dancing and singing so enthusiastically, I was bummed I came in on the tail end.

It was time for the meet-up then, so I headed to Soarin and met Heather. We used our fast passes for a ride, and then started wandering around the park to see what new foods there were for the Festival of the Holidays. Our first stop was France where we each got bouchee a la reine traditionnelle: turkey and mushrooms in a veloute cream sauce served in a light puff pastry. Yum! It was pretty tricky to try to cut that pastry with the plastic fork, so we both ended up picking up our pastry with our hands.

Next Heather bought a black and white cookie, but it didn’t tempt me. We kept walking and chatting and having a good time, and then Heather said she’d gotten the pasta at Italy and it was great, so we both got one of those. I want to try the mac and cheese in Germany like Mom and Jo have raved over, but that’s here all the time so I figured I’d try this one out first. Cavatappi ai quattro formaggi: baked four cheese pasta with a parmesan crumble and truffle essence. It was good, but not amazing. I liked that the cheese was strong, and definitely sopped up all the sauce I could. We walked in the German stores and looked at what was for sale there, and saw a super tall guy behind the counter.

At Morocco I bought some Sfenj: warm beignets with cream, cinnamon sugar, toasted almonds and chocolate sauce. They were very good, but like most things chocolate they could have tripled the chocolate they put on there and I almost would have been satisfied with the amount. My last purchase of the evening was the Black Forest roulade with cherry whipped cream. I thought it was pretty good but Heather raved over it.

We went to Mexico then and window shopped and rode the ride. Heather told me they’ve just renewed their annual passes and gave me some info on what passes to look for. We watched a craftswoman make a glass snowman then, and when we walked out it was starting to drizzle. After a little bit the rain picked up and we were caught out in the open. We huddled under a big cart umbrella for a while and talked to the cast member there about the new rides coming. Then we hot-footed it to the nearby store so I could get our new magnets. When the rain died down we shopped at Mouse Gear for a while and then decided to go home. As we were passing Spaceship Earth I noticed that the wait time was 5 minutes so we rode that ride. I showed her the two hidden Mickey’s (scrolls and stained glass) but she didn’t seem impressed by either of them.

What’s going on with my hair in the future??!!

We walked out to our cars talking all the way. We had such a good night! I hope she enjoyed it as much as I did!

At home Ted and Max were playing online so I got into bed and worked on my blog a bit before hitting the hay.
